Dr. Steven R. Anderson will be opening Orthopaedic Specialists of Wilkes in November 2009 in association with Wilkes Regional Medical Center and Carolinas Healthcare System. Dr. Anderson completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Duke University Medical Center. He has been in practice in Boone, N.C. for the last several years and has special interests in joint reconstruction, sports medicine and fracture surgery. However, Dr. Anderson is very excited to move his practice to Wilkes County. He will be performing surgery exclusively at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Dr. Anderson is married to Erin Taylor Anderson, who is a Wilkes County native.

Dr. Barber completed undergraduate studies at The Citadel, graduate school at Appalachian State University and medical school at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Barber completed residency training in Anesthesiology at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He is a member of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia, the International Anesthesia Research Society, and the American Society of Anesthesiology. Dr. Barber's clinical interest include ultrasound guided anesthesia and obstetric anesthesia. He is a native of Wilkes County. In his free time he enjoys skiing, playing golf and sailing.

Dr. Benn has joined Wilkes Regional Medical Center as the Medical Director of our Hospitalists Program. He will be one of 6 full-time hospitalists at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. He has been an internist for three years and comes to Wilkes from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He did his fellowship there in nephrology.

She is also bilingual speaking fluent English and Spanish. Dr. Boone is originally from Wilkes County and graduated high school from Wilkes Central.

Dr. Greg Evans joined the staff at Valley Radiology Associates in September. Dr. Evans has been a radiologist for the past nine years and has completed a fellowship in MRI at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. We are fortunate to have Dr. Evans on staff with this level of expertise. On average, only 20 Radiologist graduate yearly in the United States with a fellowship in MRI. Dr. Evans has also been the primary author of numerous articles in premier Radiology journals. Dr. Evans will be providing Diagnostic Imaging services at the hospital and at the Diagnostic Center. We are excited to have him on staff at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Shane Hodge, a general surgeon, joined the Wilkes Regional Surgical Specialist practice in North Wilkesboro. He joins Dr. Brad Huggins and Dr. Jon Thompson in the practice. The office is located in Suite 101 at 1915 West Park in North Wilkesboro. He specializes in minimally invasive procedures including hepatobiliary and colorectal. His interests include colorectal procedures and complex hernia repair. Dr. Hodge moved here from Michigan. His hobbies include rock climbing, running, and golf. Hodge received a B.S degree from Central Michigan University, and his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency in 2011 at Genesys Regional Medical Center, a Michigan State University linked program.

Dr. Hubbard earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School where he graduated with honors. Dr. Hubbard completed his orthopaedic training at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During residency he acted as team physician for a local high school and helped to care for college athletes. Dr. Hubbard performed research in total joint replacement which has been published and presented at national meetings. During his last year of residency at UNC he was awarded the Resident Teaching Award. Dr. Hubbard's interests include joint replacement of the shoulder, hip and knee, including minimally invasive techniques, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, ligament reconstruction of the knee, shoulder and knee arthroscopy, general orthopaedics and fracture care.
When not at work, Dr. Hubbard enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He is active in the community and coaches recreational soccer for kids. He enjoys hiking, golf, skiing and traveling.

Dr. Brad Huggins is joining the staff of Wilkes Regional Medical Center and Wilkes Regional Surgical Specialists on December 1, 2010. His areas of expertise include the full range of general surgical evaluation and procedures, endoscopic procedures, including screening colonoscopy, and the medical and operative treatment of peripheral vascular diseases including PAD, claudication (leg pain with walking), carotid artery disease, and varicose veins. Dr. Huggins completed his general surgical training at Washington University/Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO and a vascular fellowship at Emory Clinics and Hospital in Atlanta, GA and (practiced in the Hickory, NC community for 20 years). Having grown up and lived in smaller towns in North Carolina, Dr. Huggins, and his wife Beth, are excited to have the opportunity to live and practice in a vibrant community with a "small town" personality and feel.

Dr. Kriska, completed his medical studies at Comenius Medical School in Bratislava, Slovakia. His Internal Medicine Residency was completed at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. William Scarpa, Jr., M.D., a board certified non-invasive cardiologist, moved to Wilkes to join Dr. Thomas in the new Heart Center of Wilkes. Dr. Scarpa moved from Pinehurst, North Carolina where he practiced for three years at Pinehurst Cardiology. Prior to his move to North Carolina, he practiced in Newton, New Jersey for 17 years at Cardiology Medical Associates of Northwest New Jersey. He completed a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Lenox Hospital in New York City and a nuclear cardiology fellowship at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Columbia Presbyterian in New York City. Dr. Scarpa has followed in his father's footstep who was a practicing cardiologist in New York City for 45 years.
